When light hits the silver emulsion on the film, it leaves a trace — an image. The "raw" image is stored inside the film reel until it is developed. More than 70 years after the war ended, these images want to be found, like the missing soldiers.
For many years, search teams have been looking for the remains of missing soldiers with the aim of identifying them by their death medallion and determining their fate. From 2013 to 2018, since the creation of an official search movement in Russia, the remains of more than 120,000 Soviet soldiers and officers were recovered, and more than 6,000 names and fates were established.
Among the numerous personal belongings of soldiers, negatives are rarely found. It is impossible to capture the images due to the passage of time and the organic environment in which they were stored. Unable to convey the story, these abstract images convey the feeling of that time more powerfully than the filmed scenes.
