An American Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber at an airfield near Poltava. Poltava, USSR (Ukraine). Before 22 June 1944.On the front of the plane is a drawing with the inscription Yankee Doodle. The photo was taken before one of the most successful bombing raids of the German Luftwaffe on the night of 22nd June 1944. According to official records, 43 B-17 Fortresses were destroyed or damaged beyond repair and 26 Fortresses were badly damaged but repairable.
